Re: Can organizer

If it can support 400# per shelf it must be
industrial grade shelving.
If that is the case, the price is fair, cheap even.

The problem I see: It will not protect the cans
from rodents. I hate it when rats piss on food cans.

My cats spend their nights in the basement so I don't have that problem :D My one tabby catches and eats rabbit, birds and whatever else he can find. Not many rodents around here though anyway.

perl-

Also that system, trades some
storage volume for convenience.
I like the idea though, I might try
to somehow rig up something for a
few open shelves that I already have.
It would be convenient for cycling
through a smaller number of older
cans that need to be used up
fairly soon.

Another option is to rotate storage regions rather than rotate an individual stock.

Divide your storage space into 3 regions. Fill one region at a time. Pull from the 1st, while you fill #2, and #3. When #1 is empty, start pulling from #2 and filling #1.

The downside is that you must duplicate in all three regions, e.g. you can't store all your tuna in one region. And you may run out of ketchup in #1 and have to pull the ketchup from #2 while you are still pulling rice from #1.

For this reason, if you've got the space to make even more regions, all the better!

I keep my food storage in metal cabinets. We had a rat invasion once. Ugh! It's unbelievable how much they can destroy and how quickly they can do it. I figure that if TSHTF, rodents could become a major problem.

Besides, the shelves just look like the sort you'd see in anyone's basement workshop, so if anyone comes in to fix the furnace, etc., they won't see the food storage...except for the buckets...which are hiding the ammo cases... Hmmm, I guess my system does need a little tweaking.

Maddie-

Yup, those metal cabinets are great.
But the four I have are full.
Am keeping an eye out for a few more
to replace some open shelving.
